Iowa grew by 5.4 percent between 1990 and 2000, with a population of 2,926,324, according to new census figures. Rural areas declined, while metropolitan areas saw a big increase, especially in the area surrounding Des Moines. Though the state remains mostly white, an influx in Hispanics in several counties helped to raise growth rates. Hispanics now make up the largest minority group in the state.
