Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 04:32 pm A great article called, "Use Garden Space For Vegetables That Pack A Nutritional Wallop" by Dan Vierria appeared in the March 21, 2004 Columbus Dispatch. According to this article, broccoli and tomatoes are anti-cancer powerhouses. Broccoli sprouts deliver even more anti-cancer compounds than mature broccoli. Tomatoes have lycopene, an antioxidant shown to retard cancer cells. Tomatoes also help men avoid prostate cancer. Other "super foods" include: beans, blueberries, oats, oranges, pumpkin, wild salmon, spinach, walnuts, bell peppers, chard, kale, peas, garlic, red chilis, brussels sprouts, carrots, collard greens, beet greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens. Potatoes, eggplant, lettuce, cucumbers and radishes have a high water content and are "nutritional paupers" compared with the "superfoods" like broccoli and tomatoes.

Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 08:44 pm Re: When is it safe to plant? Do I have to scrape off the top layer of soil and dump it into a radioactive waste pile? I can't remember the specifics at the moment, but I can tell you that Joel answered those questions in his book. Strategic Relocation: North American Guide to Safe Places, I think it was in, but it may also be in The Secure Home. Seems like it was 1 1/2 year or 3 1/2 years to plant, but I may be wrong.

Monday, March 13, 2006 - 06:28 am A heads up for those of us with yards & gardens.... If you use mulch around your house be very careful about buying mulch this year. After the Hurricane in New Orleans many trees were blown over. These trees were then turned into mulch and the state is trying to get rid of tons and tons of this mulch to any state or company who will come and haul it away. So it will be showing up in Home Depot and Lowes at dirt cheap prices with one huge problem; Formosan Termites will be the bonus in many of those bags. New Orleans is one of the few areas in the country were the Formosan Termites has gotten a strong hold and most of the trees blown down were already badly infested with those termites. Now we may have the worst case of transporting a problem to all parts of the country that we have ever had. These termites can eat a house in no time at all and we have no good control against them, so tell your friends that own homes to avoid cheap mulch and know were it came from. See this website for further details... --Greg Szymanski http://www.agctr.lsu.edu/termites/ http://www.rense.com/general69/formo.htm
