Saturday, January 08, 2005 - 07:34 pm Can I use "direct solar" without a battery bank ? ( what happens when you run out of fuel fer yer generator , the dern thang breaks, or yer batteries wear out ??? ) :'<

Tuesday, January 11, 2005 - 11:55 am You need batteries to "even things out." Yes batteries do wear out but you'll need something when there are clouds or at night. Solar panels alone won't be any good. You also need an inverter and other hardware. Check out this site: www.dripdrop.org/battery Click on "Related Links" and then "Marv Ray, Solar Specialist" There you will find out more about solar info.

Tuesday, January 11, 2005 - 02:10 pm Hay Darrell : What kind of battery can sit for long term in storage and not degrade ? :->
| |
Wednesday, January 12, 2005 - 01:01 pm That is actually a complex question so a complex answer is in order. First, I must say I am not an electrical engineer or a battery specialist. Nor do I play one on TV. So what I have to say comes only from my personal experience. The best way to store a battery long term without degredation is to buy a new lead acid (car type) battery that is dry and buy a package of acid. It can be stored even in a cold environment for a long time until you need to use it. Of course this means you must have several types of chargers and testors. You should have a high rate, high amp charger; a variable rate with a trickle charge setting; and a float charger(different than a trickle charger). The float charger just keeps a charged battery topped off. Float chargers won't charge a dead battery properly. You should also have a hygrometer and a load tester (which contains a volt meter) and you should know how to use them. Deep Cycle RV/marine storage batteries with acid in them don't seem to store well unless they are stored with a float charger on them and are kept out of freezing temperatures. Gel Cell seem to do better than car and deep cycle batteries with acid in them. Absorbant Glass Mat (AGM) batteries seem to retain a charge for a very long time as long as they don't get too cold. They are designed for room temperature storage and use. They are the UPS style batteries like the ones sold by Dynasty. These also do not seem to leak acid or corrode the posts like all others do. You may want to contact some HAM radio operators in your area who maintain mountain top repeaters. They would know what workes best in harsh environments.
